A little offtopic maybe, but never the less, important.

I seem to see a few negative remarks about Fedora around here, so I would like to investigate a little.

I have been studying the Linux world for maybe three years now, and have so far only had Fedora (1, 4 and 5) installed. And as far as I can see, it's a fine OS. Can't complain.

So, what is not so great about this OS? Jeremy?

haha :)

Centos is a spin off of RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) well tested and well supported and well the best. centos follows RHEL so any tweak/addon/change is made from the big guys them self.

Fedora on the other hand runs the latest of software yes still tested but its still in beta "release". I personally find it a pain in the butt to work with.

I have a long list of things about fedora i dont like but its all personal preference really.

If i had to pick a Linux OS i would pick trustix and for the all over OS i would pick freebsd.

Aha, I see. :)

But how about if only the "hard core" webserver part of Fedora is used? Ie., the server is only running stuff like httpd, mysqld, named, postfix, iptables, sshd, dovecot, etc etc, and in "runlevel 3".

Are these services not pretty much 100% stable? Or would it be a safer bet to just switch to Centos?

What would you recommend?

Remember If you use any control panel it will install its own version of software http etc etc but what i mean is the kernel and the system side packages.
Fedora seems to be proc picky because of the kernel i believe they dropped the p3.

From fedora 2 or 3 i stopped looking into it the OS it self seemed more desktop then server. Id just go centos.

side note i believe you don't want dovecot installed with DSM as it conflicts with courier.

Ok, thanks for the info.

I will definently look into Centos.
